In the 51 years since Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln memorial in Washington, DC and delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, our country has witnessed dramatic social change for the better. There is, however, much more work to be done to realize MLK’s vision of transforming “the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” Anti-Semitism, racism, bigotry, homophobia, and a host of other threats to our freedoms remain rampant and widespread. But there is reason for optimism. At our first Women’s Initiative program of 2015 Deborah Lauter will speak about the state of civil rights in the United States, and how women in Houston can actively work with ADL to help promote justice and fair treatment for all.
